An October Surprise has long been anticipated in the US presidential election campaign. That expectation is based upon October Surprises -- real and imagined-- of the past. It is the expectation that some unexpected event will pop up--or be created-- and change the dynamics of the election.

Remember Ms. Heinz Kerry saying that President Bush would spring an October Surprise by announcing the capture of Osama bin Laden? She thought he was already a prisoner and the President was waiting for the most auspicious moment for his campaign to release the news.

Surpise! Osama bin Laden sprang this year's October Surprise!

But there is a surprise for Osama bin Laden too. He thinks his sudden appearance will harm the chances for President Bush to be re-elected, a goal has has long had in mind. But, in fact, his appearance and threats will actually help Presendent Bush's re-election chances.
